The Addams Family c. 1960s
snow-claw said: Hi, so I'm super confused. I'm reading only Tpbs, I've started with All New X-men and Uncanny. Then decided to follow it up with Uncanny Avengers. But! At the end of 3rd volume the earth explodes!? Wtf? How does it tie in with other series? I'm lost.
It all ties in, but these stories are not all happening at the same time. You also have to throw in additional allowances when time travel is involved. I will expound on this for those who don’t know how this stuff works.
Remember, time is not absolute when you are reading these comics. While they do sync up with each other, it is not all happening in real time. The point you are reading now may not connect with everything else until later.
A single story arc can take place over the course of 3 hours, but be 10 issues. Conversely, 1 issue can take place over the course of weeks, or months. It all depends on the pacing, and beats the writer needs to cover.
Let’s use the Wolverine series that just wrapped, as an example. The last year’s worth of stories led directly into Death of Wolverine. They had a lot to cover before the end was to come. The series starts out with Logan no longer an X-Man, he has a new costume, and is teamed up with a group of villainous mercenaries. On top of that, he has a new girlfriend.
However, well into the second run of Wolverine & the X-Men, Logan is still at the Jean Grey School, old costume, and romantically involved with Ororo.
As you are reading, you know you can’t be seeing these things happen concurrently. Wolverine gives a clearer indication of this, as it gives you periodic flashbacks bridging the gap between then, and now. But nothing in the other X-books was giving any indication of where Logan’s book fell into the greater scheme of things. He was still using his standard yellow and blue outfit, and showed no signs of anything we were seeing in his solo title.
Then we get a flashback scene in Wolverine 4 showing Logan leave the X-Men, and has him show up at the New Charles Xavier School where Cyclops and crew are shacked up.
Nobody was supposed to know where they were. It was supposed to be a big secret, and conceit on Scott’s part that he was completely hiddend from the other heroes. But apparently Logan knows, and none of the freshman class of X-Men are surprised by any of this.
Something must have gone down showing him the location, but I was damned if I knew. Three months go by, and we to Uncanny X-Men 24. Just one month before the last issue of Wolverine. It is at this point we get the big reveal that Beast has known where Scott was all along, but chose to ignore him. So we now have our link up point.
As far as the current story in Uncanny X-Men goes, the first issue of the now ended Wolverine series has not even occurred yet. It took that much of a running start, so that by the time Wolverine dies, and is gone from the month to month stories of the Marvel Universe, he had accomplished everything he needed in his personal life.
It all matches up, and you will find that is the case with Uncanny Avengers as you read along. Let Remender tell his story, and you will see as it happens.
